What is Kiko?

By

Part of the Best of Web 2.0 Series

Kiko is one of the underappreciated products of the Web 2.0 phenomenon. Like any successful product, it has its share of competitors, big and small, but it has managed to flourish by including some superior features despite its similarity to other services in its category.

Kiko is a calendar sharing service with one major advantage over larger competitors like Google Calendar. Almost universally, users are quite impressed with Kiko's user interface, because of its responsiveness and the fact that almost everything on the screen is interactive. One of the least appreciated and underengineered aspects of user interface development is the fact that new users unfamiliar with a given product or its features are completely unable to use it because there just isn't anywhere to start.

This isn't a problem with Kiko. Almost everything on the screen is interactive, meaning users can just start typing just about anywhere and they're using the calendar. The pastel colors are very pleasant on the eyes, which is always nice, and the interface is very responsive.

Kiko offers a number of features, including public calendar views and e-mail, instant message or mobile phone text message reminders of appointments, with international service support as well. Calendar information can be imported from such applications as iCal, and Kiko offers the ability to view and coordinate with contact calendars as well. It is also possible to incorporate RSS feeds, which allows static information like holidays to be included by default in a new calendar setup without users having to manually enter the information.
