Quake 2 and the Threewave Capture the Flag Game

Believe it or not there was a time when first person shooter games like Quake and DOOM did not have capture the flag options. It's an obvious feature to add to any team-based game today: even World of Warcaft's Warsong Gulch is a capture the flag game. But back when these things were still being invented, forming teams and playing capture the flag in a virtual "world" just didn't happen.

The Threewave CTF mod for Quake 2 was undoubtedly one of the most successful early first person shooter game modifications. Quake 2's unique blend of weapons and especially the (sometimes annoying) automatic grappling hook made CTF games using the Quake 2 engine some of the most frenetic and quick victories or defeats in multiplayer gaming.

This Capture the Flag modification has influenced many different games since, most notably the same gameplay feature in other games like Unreal Tournament and the successful Halo series as well.
